Showing love for local Farmer Markets

We have our own garden that I get plenty veggies throughout the season but nothing beats fresh fruits from the orchards, farm fresh eggs, meat and cheese that come from local area farms.

Not only am I keeping my family healthy and happy but I am supporting local farmers in my area. Summer is one of my favorite seasons because I can go within a 5 mile radius and hit 3 farmer markets, Lansdowne Farmer’s Market, Ardmore Farmer’s Market and Oakmont Farmer’s Market. All have different vendors and things to offer, and the bonus is all are open on different days of the week.

I found this great site called American Farmland Trust. This site encourages people to seek out local markets in your area. You can find the top 5 markets for each state and also VOTE for your favorite. As I was searching through this site I came across a very compelling video Saving the Land that Sustains Us .

Did you know that we don’t produce enough fresh fruits and vegetables for everyone to eat a balanced and nutritious diet? In fact, it is estimated that we need another 13 million acres of farmland growing fruits and vegetables in this country just for Americans to meet the minimum daily requirement of fruits and vegetables set by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
