Staying Cool While Pregnant

It is summer and it is hot outside. The only thing worse about being submerged in the heat, is being submerged in the heat when you are pregnant. Doesn’t seem to matter how far along you are, the ‘oven’ is on and staying cool can be quite the task.

Heat and pregnancy don’t always get along. It can be dangerous to have your body temperature raise too high and it is also very dangerous to get dehydrated while pregnant.

I was lucky that I was not in my third trimester during the summer for any of my pregnancies. I feel so bad for the ladies I see with their beautiful obviously-ready-to-birth-soon pregnant bellies in the blistering heat. My babes are all winter babies so I got to embrace the large belly with comfy sweaters and cold temperatures.

Like I said it is very important not to let yourself get too overheated or dehydrated. It can cause some serious issues like pre-term labor, issues with nausea and amniotic fluid levels. It is also a major contributor to fatigue and headaches for women who are pregnant.

Staying cool and hydrated are very important. The biggest thing you can do is to drink, drink and drink more water. I had a hard time trying to stay hydrated when pregnant and I did have some complications because of it. I was hospitalized a few times during all my pregnancies because I was dehydrated.

Air conditioner will be your best friend! During my first pregnancy the summer was so humid I actually went on “strike” from house duties until my husband hooked up the air conditioning. I was hot flashing to begin with because of the pregnancy and the heat just about made me want to walk around naked … just about.
