Week 9

Your little embryo is now a fetus, measuring an inch in length. Teeny tiny muscles are starting to form, but you’ll have to wait a whole month until you feel any kicks. At this stage, however, you should be able to hear your baby’s heart beating.

Baby

Your baby is now officially a fetus and measures about an inch long, but she only weighs a teeny bit – less than one quarter ounce actually. She also is looking more human than she has yet, and her heart is beginning to fine tune itself into four chambers. This is also when her teeth begin to form in her gums. Her tiny muscles are beginning to form, and her eyes are completely formed, although her eyelids will be fused shut until much later, usually about 27 weeks. Her facial features, mouth, nose, nostrils and ears are distinct, but any sex organs are not yet distinguishable externally. The baby’s main body features are ready to go, and this is good because from here on out your baby is going to grow rapidly.

Mommy

You may or may not look all that pregnant yet, but you definitely are feeling it. Even as your waist begins to thicken, your baby bump probably hasn’t really begun to protrude. If you are suffering from morning sickness, its definitely in full swing by now, but just know its only likely to last a few more weeks. Don’t worry if you’re feeling as moody as ever, that’s to be expected at this point in your pregnancy. Try to get as much rest as possible, which will ease any feelings of mood swings, upset stomach and headaches that you may be suffering from. This is also the point where your doctor is using a Doppler to scan your uterus – listen for the heartbeat of your baby, it could be that first exciting feeling that there is really something happening in there!
