Week 24

Heading towards the end of your second trimester, your baby is about 1 ½ pounds by now, and is gaining about 6 ounces a week by now. Your baby’s face is almost fully formed, complete with little eyelashes and eyebrows!

Baby

Her taste buds are forming pretty quickly, so eat healthy to help her develop those tastes for herself as she gets older. Now that she’s about a pound and a half, she looks like a very small newborn baby, but doesn’t really have much body fat yet. And soon enough she’ll be developing pigment in her eyes and for her hair. She’s gained between 4-6 ounces since last week, and her brain is growing rapidly. Her lungs are also developing surfactant, which will help her breath by aiding her air sacs to be inflated once she is born.

Mommy

The top of your uterus, the fundus, is above your belly button now. You’re still gaining about a pound or so a week, and are definitely feeling large, although probably pretty comfortable since you’ve rid yourself of the unpleasant symptoms of the first trimester, but don’t quite feel the heavy weight of late pregnancy either. You’ll probably also have a glucose screening at your doctor pretty soon, just to make sure you don’t develop abnormal blood sugar, or even pregnancy-related diabetes known as gestational diabetes.
