If you are trying to conceive, you’ll be glad to know that there are many things that you can do to increase your chances of conception, and even more things you can do to plan ahead for a successful, healthy pregnancy. Want to know one of the best things you can do? Get your checkups! Make sure you visit your primary care physician and get a thorough physical and a blood test. A checkup will help to ensure that you nip any health issues you have in the bud before you get pregnant. Knowing that you have a clean bill of health will set you on the right path and can increase your chances of conceiving! No one loves getting a blood test, but you’ll have to get one once you are pregnant anyway, and if you get one close to the time you conceive, you may not need another one. You will also want to make sure that you are maintaining a healthy weight. More and more Americans are considered overweight or obese, and studies show that excess weight can affect one’s chances of conceiving. Finally, while at your doctor, you should make sure that you are up to date on all of your vaccines.
 
You should also make an appointment with your gynecologist to get a PAP smear. If you do not have an OB-GYN, this might be the perfect time to shop around for someone you feel comfortable with. A simple gynecological exam and urine test can reveal a number of conditions that may interfere with conception and a healthy pregnancy.
 
Finally, you will definitely want to go to the Dentist. This may sound strange, but studies show that gum disease can effect pregnancy. Even worse, gum disease can get worse during pregnancy (gross!). So you’ll want to have a healthy mouth before you conceive. Make these three checkups are taken care of and you’ll be well on your way to a healthy and happy pregnancy!
