Great Ways to Meet Other Moms

Whether it’s an organized group meeting or a few moms coming together casually, time spent with connecting other moms can be so valuable to a new mom who may be questioning how to handle a particular issue or just looking for some adult interaction! But if you don’t already have a support network in place prior to having a child; if you are new to an area or if your friends don’t have young children, you may be wondering how and where to meet other moms.

Sometimes a group of moms from a child birth education course will re-connect after their babies are born. The babies’ birthdays are close, so the group will move through developmental milestones together, which can offer first-time moms a great “sounding board” for related questions, especially since group members who select the same child birth approach often have similar parenting philosophies as well. One tactic is to reach out to the teacher or organization that presented your class.

National special interest groups such as, Moms of Multiples (MOMS) for parents of twins or triplets, and Mothers and More for women who have altered their career path to raise children, offer moms a chance to connect with others with similar interests and/or lifestyles through local chapters. La Leche League is an international group with chapters around the country that host monthly meetings supporting nursing moms and bringing moms with similar philosophies together. Check online for local chapter information.

Other great resources when looking to find structured mommy meetings are your local library story time, and any mommy and me music or exercise classes around town. Pediatrician offices, information boards at the library, local parent magazines or newspapers with local event calendars or group listings are all great places to learn of local groups or upcoming mommy events, while parks, gyms, and coffee shops are spots that offer opportunities to socialize causally with other moms.
