Pregnant Women Urged to Get Flu Vaccine

Flu VaccineThis year, the March of Dimes is urging all pregnant women to get the flu vaccine.  Dr. Jennifer L. Howse, president of the March of Dimes said, “Based on expert medical opinion, we urge all pregnant women, and women who expect to become pregnant, to get their influenza immunization because the flu poses a serious risk of illness and death during pregnancy.”

The good news is that only 1 flu shot will be needed to protect against the seasonal and H1N1 strains of the flu.  Getting the vaccine is the best way to protect both mother and baby from the flu.  Mothers are also urged to practice other means of protection against the flu such as frequent hand washing, limiting exposure to children, using hand sanitizer, keeping hands away from their mouths/eyes/noses, and avoiding people who are sick.
